5 ways to make your 2019 goals achievable

It’s that time of year again! Talking plans and goals for 2019. The last few weeks I’ve been focusing my blog and Facebook lives on the theme of Planning for 2019. Today it’s all about goal setting and more specifically, 5 ways to make sure you achieve your 2019 goals!

From my own personal experience and working with my clients through the goal setting process, I have found specific things that hinder goal achievement that can be very simply overcome in the initial goal-setting process. What I mean is, getting off to the right start and laying the right foundation is the key to you avoiding the pitfalls of non-goal achievement. The great things is that these 5 basic “rules” for goal setting are really easy but will make a big difference!

Here are the 5 ways to ensure that your 2019 goals are achievable:

1. Write your goals down
I know it may sound obvious and you are likely already doing this, but did you know that by doing this one simple step in writing your goals down, you have actually increased the likelihood of goal achievement by 42%? Yes, it’s true! Alarmingly, most people don’t write their goals down, so just by doing so you’re way ahead! The act of writing or typing the goal out also brings it into the physical realm. Your brain can literally see the idea on paper or on your screen and so it already becomes more realistic, more tangible, as opposed to a thought floating around in your mind.

2. Follow the SMART goals format
Your goals need to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-framed (SMART for short). This ensures you have defined the goal well and it is clear what the successful outcome will be. It also ensures that there is a way to measure success. How will you know you’ve achieved your goal? The goal must answer this by clearly indicating measurement. Your goal must be attainable (there is an actual chance that the goal can be attained) and it must be relevant. Are your goals relevant to you and your business growth? (Make sure you review my blog on Power Priorities before you answer this.) And lastly and perhaps most importantly, the goal must be time-framed. In other words, there must be a deadline to achieving the goal.

3. Create a written goals plan
This is by far the most overlooked step in the goal setting process. Goals are often written down but there is no plan made. When you have no plan, it is the equivalent of standing at the base of a mountain and looking up to your goal at the peak of the mountain. It’s overwhelming and more daunting than inspiring! You want to create a plan of action to get you up the mountain so-to-speak. A step-by-step process on how to achieve your goal makes the process easier as it breaks it down into smaller steps and gives you smaller goals to work on and achieve. As you achieve each smaller goal you get closer to achieving the big goal. This will help you get started as you’ll know what to do and when, you’ll be more efficient and you’ll be able to monitor your progress. So many benefits, you simply must have a goals plan!

4. Create accountability
We are all human and can at times fall off the wagon. Even the best, most disciplined of us, can have moments when we do not follow through. It’s not because we are lazy or because there is something wrong with us, it’s simply because we’re dealing with the change process. Working on any new goal will require you to do new things, essentially enact new behaviours and ways of being in the world. This process of change by its very nature is unnatural to us. Our brains tend to resist change. So creating new habits and behaviours can be challenging.  Ideally, working with a coach who is familiar with the change process, will make this process much easier for you. The key here is accountability. You can create accountability by stating publicly what you intend to achieve. Knowing that others are expecting you to do something can keep you more on-track with your goals. You can also get an accountability partner, someone who will hold you accountable for what you said you would do and you can do the same for them.

5. Stay focused on one step
The goals you set are likely challenging and require a certain amount of change from where you are at the moment. If we go back to the mountain analogy, you really want to make sure you are not gazing up at the top of the mountain the whole way as you may find you want to give up. In other words, stay focused on the smaller goals, the step that you are working on at the moment. If you have your goal plan laid out, that’s all you need to do- focus on the step you’re on, then move to the next, and repeat until goal achievement is inevitable!

What does a coach do?

The term “coach” is now familiar to us all in the business domain. There are business coaches, marketing coaches, sales coaches, money coaches… Then there are mentors and their role is different too. With coaching as the second fastest growing industry in the world, gone are the days when people thought “coach” meant you were coaching the local sports team.

We’re all familiar with the term, but the reality is that there are a wide variety of services that fall under the general term “coach”. So when I say “I’m a coach”, I realise that they may mean many different things to different people. To provide clarity around my services and my role as a coach, I have put together my summary of the role of a coach. A qualified coach will be able to support you and your business in the various ways outlined below. It goes without saying that these are the roles that I take on with all of my clients to empower and support their personal and business growth.

Support in pursuing your goals
Your coach is just as committed as you are to seeing you succeed. They are there for you along the journey to encourage and support you in whatever way you need. Think of it as having a cheerleader supporting you all the way in achieving that big goal you’re going for. How good would that be? How more likely are you to achieve that goal? This is one of the fundamental benefits of having a coach.

Helping you understand what’s truly important to you
Creating a fulfilling life and business requires that you understand what is truly important to you. Life and business are not separate entities so a wholistic approach is important in order to create true fulfillment. This is easy when understand your values. A coach will help you to identify your values and explore how you can honour those values in your business and life to create fulfilling results.

Giving you a wider perspective & more options
The nature of a coaching relationship is that a coach is always creating what we call “space”. Your coach brings no personal agenda or opinions and can therefore create “space” for a wider perspective to develop. Your coach can therefore help you to see other options that you may not have considered. This process casts a wider net of opportunity and together you can consider and try out different options in order to create the results that you want. Your coach will not usually give you advice unless requested as they understand that only you can know what is truly best for you.  (This is the major contrast between a coach and mentor.)

Providing a neutral sounding board
Ever just wanted to talk your ideas and thoughts out loud to someone who is really listening? This is one of the great benefits of having a coach. Instead of having those ideas remain floating around in your mind, you can put them out there and “think out loud” so-to-speak. The benefits of this alone are truly life and business-changing! This process of thinking out loud to a trusted person who knows your situation and what is important to you is invaluable in creating clarity.

Helping you create a custom action plan to get what you want
On the practical side, you cannot create results without action. Your coach will work with you to create an action plan to achieve whatever goals or changes you want to create. Having a plan is essential, as it will map out the steps you need to take, create deadlines and anticipate obstacles. With such a plan in place the likelihood of goal achievement is significantly increased.

Helping you to make decisions without giving advice
One of the biggest benefits of having a coach is in the feedback and exploration process of making important decisions. It can be  difficult to try and make decisions alone and to consider all options. Your coach will work with you to help you understand what is important to you, to open up many different options and then to work through which direction to take. It is important to note that coaches do not give advice on which directions to take. Your coach will instead provide powerful questions and ways of working with you that will enhance and expedite the decision-making process.

Helping you stay on track in pursuit of your goals
This role that your coach assumes is critical in delivering the results that you want. It’s easy at the beginning to be excited and committed to your goals but inevitably priorities can slip. This is when your coach can remind you of your priorities and help you maintain consistency.

Helping you identify and work through limiting beliefs and roadblocks
This is an incredibly powerful role that your coach will provide. What prevents us from achieving our goals and creating a fulfilling life is often ourselves. We are all human and all have our own roadblocks and limits that are often unconscious. Your coach can help you bring these limiting beliefs to light when they are hindering your progress. A qualified coach can then help you work through these limitations to create new options and ways forward.

Creating more self-awareness
Overall, working with your coach will help you develop more self-awareness. The nature of the coaching process involves asking powerful questions. These questions open up new perspectives and ways of doing things. They often provoke a deeper reflection upon your thoughts and actions which brings with it a new sense of awareness. You will understand how you work and what is going on within yourself on a deeper level. This self-awareness brings new growth and opportunities both for yourself and your business.

How to tell when you need a coach

Are you a solopreneur or small business owner?

Are you finding that the process of building and creating a business can be both exciting and daunting at the same time?

It feels like this because the whole process of building a business is about change. More specifically, growth and learning. It can become a frustrating and difficult process when you are navigating this journey alone. The important thing is to recognise when you are needing support.

Whether you’re you’re just starting out and need to create a sense of direction, or, if you’re ready to take your business to the next level, there are specific signs that indicate you need a coach.

I’ve tracked the most common scenarios that lead to clients reaching out for coaching and I’d like to share them with you here. If you can relate to any of these scenarios, you you definitely benefit from coaching:

1. You feel overwhelmed or stressed about your business
The main causes of overwhelm and stress relate to how you manage your mind and how you manage your time. Your coach can help you develop specific strategies to address this issue and work with you on managing your mindset to reduce overwhelm and stress.

2. You don’t have a written vision, written goals and a plan for your business
You need the big picture for your business defined in a business vision as well as a written set of goals with a specific plan to achieve them. Your coach can work with you and provide resources that assist you in this goal-setting process.

3. You’re so busy and don’t see how you can keep managing it all
If you feel like you have no time, then you should definitely seek outside help. Your coach has an “outside” perspective which can help you see your way through this. Together you can implement a time management plan to get on top of things once again.

4. You feel like you’re doing it all alone and need some support/feedback/someone to keep you on track
It’s SO much easier having someone to talk to about your business. Imagine if you had someone whose job it is is to listen and support you, someone who will help you keep on track and be the sounding board you need. This is what your coach can do for you.

5. You haven’t defined your values and the purpose of your business
If you don’t know why you’re doing what you’re doing, you can end up with motivational challenges the moment you hit a bump in the road. Additionally you need to understand your personal values and confidently know that they align with your business goals. This ensures that you’re creating the life you truly want, not just the business you want. Your coach can help you define your values and keep you focused on your purpose.

5 signs your coach is not right for you

The relationship you have with your coach is a very unique relationship. The rapport between you both is the foundation of the whole coaching process. When this is aligned, you will have a great coaching experience and create great results. When this relationship is not quite right then you will not get the results you want. So here are 5 signs to watch out for, that indicate that your coaching relationship is not right for you:

  1. They always do most of the talking
Do you find that your coach is doing most of the talking in every coaching session? If you feel like you don’t get much “air time” then this is a red flag. The other side of this same issue is do they really listen to you? When you do get a chance to talk, are they listening and responding to what you are saying? Or do they instantly follow up with their own comments and suggestions?
  1. You’re doing what they want
Are you working on goals that are important to you? Do you see the purpose of the work that you are doing together? If you feel you’re working on goals that aren’t important or relevant to you, then this is a sign something’s not right.
  1. They don’t seem to “get” you
You don’t seem to be on the same page. You explain yourself but they still can’t seem to see things from your perspective. You just don’t feel like they understand you or what you’re about. This is a big problem and a sign that it’s not a good fit.
  1. You don’t feel comfortable sharing
You don’t feel comfortable sharing details about your business or yourself with them. You feel that you might be judged and so you hold back on being completely open. This is a trust issue. Without trust, there is no coaching relationship.
  1. You’re not learning anything
You don’t come away from the coaching sessions feeling that you’ve learnt anything new about yourself or your business. Results take time, but learning should be an ongoing outcome of the coaching sessions. If you’re not learning anything, you should consider that your coach is not a “good fit” and you may need to move on.
Just remember that it’s okay if you don’t find the “right” coach the first time. You need someone who is a good fit for both you and your business. Taking your time to find the right person to work with will make all the difference to your results.
