The importance of down-time & time boundaries

It’s the long weekend this weekend- what are you doing?
Are you going away? Having a staycation? Or are you catching up on work all weekend?
Your answer to these questions will have an impact on both your results and  your wellbeing.

The question is: Do you want a positive outcome for both?  A common misconception is that you must sacrifice one for the other. I’m telling you that doing that will actually lead to a lack of fulfillment.

Creating results in your business at the expense of your health and wellbeing will not make you happy or in fact successful. Success is not measured solely by the numbers on your balance sheet. This is not my opinion, this is the basics of human psychology. Fulfillment and a sense of success comes through honoring your values and if you value your health (and most people do, let’s face it), then you cannot afford to ignore it as part of your long term success plan.

Understanding your values and aligning them with how you spend your time will bring you the success and fulfillment that you want. So with the long weekend approaching, can you carve out an hour to consider your values and follow a few steps towards fulfillment?

1. Discover what is important to you.
You need to understand your personal values. Values direct us to the things and activities in our lives that are the most fulfilling and rewarding. Here are a few questions to get you started:
When did you feel the happiest? Consider what you were doing, who you were with.
When were you most proud of yourself? Consider WHY you felt that way and if anyone else also shared in your pride.
What was a peak experience you had? ie. an experience that made you feel fulfilled and satisfied? Consider how this event gave your life meaning.
What do your choices show you about your values? Consider the people you choose to have in your life, how you treat others and how you respond to hardship. In these interactions, you act according to your values. Which values are you acting upon?

2. Discover where you have (or don’t have) these important things in your life
For each value you discovered, define your current experience of that value.
For example:
Value= creativity
How would you rate your current experience with that value? 7/10
Where is that value in your life? What activities/hobbies/rituals/projects? Writing blogs, learning Italian, creating a marketing plan, creating a course, cooking.

3. Re-design your priorities
Based on your experience of your values, what changes can you make to your priorities? Is your health value at a 7 and you need to make changes? Is your productivity/purpose at an all time low of 5/10? Use your values to allocate more time to the things and activities you need more of in your life.
